Discover everything you need to know about IT or “Information Technology”, to be translated by information technology. You will know everything about the origins of IT, its modern definition or the different professions related to this technology…
Very commonly used by English speakers, the term “Information Technology” abbreviated by “IT” refers to a wide variety of industries, occupations and technologies. So much so that it is difficult to give a precise definition of “information technology” which is often translated into French by “computing”.
In reality, IT is ubiquitous in our modern civilization, and perhaps represents its foundation, engine and cement. Information technologies offer both countless opportunities and terrifying threats to humanity.
The origins of IT
The commonly accepted definition information technology is “the study or use of systems (especially computers and telecommunications) for storing, retrieving and sending information”.
If we rely on this definition, we can consider that IT appeared several millennia ago. Already 65,000 years ago, humans drew on the walls to save a trace of their daily lives.
The appearance of the alphabet, of writing, is also part of this framework. Indeed, information technology seems inextricably linked to human evolution and its thirst for progress.
IT has thus continued to develop throughout history. In 1945, for the first time, a computer program was read by a computer. This is what enabled the exponential growth of information technology, with the tremendous advances that marked the next 50 years.
Other major events in the history of IT include the invention of Ethernet in 1973, the first personal computer in 1975, and of course the creation of the World Wide Web by CERN in 1993.
The appearance of the Internet and its availability to all constitute a veritable renaissance for information technology. The web has enabled this technology to become truly collective, and symbolizes the advent of the “information age” .
Today, we would rather define information technology as ” use of computers and other physical devices storage or networking, infrastructures and processes aimed at creating, processing, storing, securing and exchanging all forms of electronic data.
This modern definition encompasses all IT devices and all the technologies and professions related to them. In the era of the Internet of Things, this also concerns the tens of billions of objects connected to the Internet.
However, it is possible to break down the world of IT into six main sectors : networking, cybersecurity, computers, programming, the World Wide Web, and IT support. These are the six distinct categories of information technology.
By developing, IT gives birth to new professions necessary to create, install, maintain and protect all this technology. According to CompTIA’s Cyberstates Report 2018, 1.5 million IT jobs were created from 2010 to 2017 in the United States alone.
Among these occupations are computer support technicians or networking, cybersecurity experts, computer systems analysts, programmers or web developers.
The demand is such that we deplore today a real shortage of qualified professionals in the IT field. The cybersecurity sector is particularly affected, and it is estimated that 3.5 million positions will be filled globally in 2021. Salaries are attractive, but few individuals realize these professional opportunities.
What is an IT department within a company?
Within a company, we generally find an IT department or team. It is simply a team of IT professionals, responsible for using IT technologies to solve the problems faced by the organization.
L’IT team is responsible the governance of IT systems, their operation and maintenance, and the management of the physical and material IT infrastructure. For example, team members will need to perform security tests, maintain the network, or install equipment such as servers and PCs.
They must also help other employees in the event of a technical problem. The best IT teams will be able to create processes and automate them to make business run smoothly.
Does the term “IT” still have a meaning in 2020?
In the eyes of many people, the term “Information Technology” no longer accurately represents modern IT and all its implications. However, it is now anchored in mores and lexicons.
The definition of this term will continue to evolve to accompany innovations and technological transformations, but it will probably never disappear. It is therefore important to understand its many facets and their subtleties.
