The company was one of the bright new lights in Netflix’s drama programming, but unfortunately was one of the casualties caused by COVID-19. Filming was supposed to resume in September 2020 but this is no longer the case. Here’s what we know.
To recap, The Society was Netflix’s big teen drama for 2019, which involves supernatural elements and sees a group of high school graduates take to the field. Unfortunately, they cannot make it to their destination, so return home only to find that their town is empty. It’s up to them to figure out what’s going on and find a way to get things done.
Season 1 was released on Netflix on May 10, 2019 on Netflix globally. If you haven’t started watching yet, check out our guide to everything you need to know before you get started.
Now let’s see what happens with season 2.
The Society Season 2 Renewal Status
Official renewal status: initially renewed but later canceled (last updated: 08/21/2020)
After two months of waiting, season 2 of The Society was to return to Netflix thanks to a Tweet from the See What’s Next Twitter account.
In the Season 2 announcement video (which has since been deleted), we saw various cast members talking about the second season. They gave us some teasing about what to expect if it was for “more pie? more fugitives, more memes, and more answers on Charlie. They also mentioned that we might find out more about Becca’s baby daddy and jokingly, Grizz’s hair.
However, on August 21, 2020, that decision was reversed according to an official statement from Netflix made to Deadline.
Why was The Society season 2 canceled?
The company has been delayed due to COVID-19 (like most Netflix productions) and costs are thought to have ballooned for a big ensemble drama like this.
“We’ve made the difficult decision not to move forward with the second seasons of The Society and I’m not okay with that,” Netflix told Deadline.
“We are disappointed to have to make these decisions due to the circumstances created by COVID, and are grateful to these creators including: Jonathan Entwistle, Christy Hall, Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Dan Cohen and Josh Barry of 21 Laps Entertainment for I disagree with this; Chris Keyser, Marc Webb and Pavlina Hatoupis for the company; and all the writers, cast and crew who have worked tirelessly to make these shows for our members around the world.
The series also runs in particular in the United States in Lancaster, Massachusetts. US filming restrictions could have played a role.
Deadline also states that: “uncertainty around production dates and balance of availability from a major cast like The Society, coupled with unexpected budget increases due to COVID, has led to decisions on The Society »
Matthew Ball, a former strategist for Amazon Studios, further explains:
The economy can V and a vaccine happen, but a soundstage can’t run double, nor the actor
50% of 2020 productions have disappeared and cannot be invented. And production will be slower, with actors selecting projects based on contractual positions. Doesn’t matter if you scheduled September https://t.co/5T4024TvSi

Reactions have come slowly since the cancellation. Kathryn Newton, who played Allie Pressman on the show, said the following:
“I’m so sad that #TheSociety was canceled because it was such a huge cast with such talented and amazing actors. I will never forget him. I gained a family. Not to mention the fandom that started with The Society. I don’t think this family will ever end.
Where was The Society season 2 in production?
Filming for The Society was originally scheduled to begin in March 2020, but like other Netflix Originals it has joined the big slate of Netflix Originals, The Society was postponed initially specifically stating it was going on a “4 to 8 weeks”.
Filming for the series is taking place only in Boston, but as of August 2020, we still haven’t heard if production has resumed. In an article posted on Wbur, a Netflix project was mentioned (not named but supposed to be The Society S2), which seems to suggest that filming in the area may get up and running again in September saying:
“He recently heard that in mid-September, Netflix will begin pre-production on a project originally slated for the spring.”
The Campaign to Save Society
We must point out that a campaign has since been launched to relaunch the Society.
Using normal methods, including a Change.org petition and using social media, fans hope Netflix will change its mind about saving the series.
As of November 14, 2020, the campaign on Change.org has reached nearly 87,000 signatures.
On November 14, 2020, the show’s Twitter fans held a “trending party” to hopefully attract more people using the hashtag “#savethesociety”.

What We Expected From The Society Season 2
Despite their turbulent beginnings, the little company actually started to function towards the end. We understand a bit more about what’s going on and how the event unfolded, but there are still a lot of questions to ask on that front.
Of course, the first season sets up a second season perfectly with the coup in full swing and Allie and Will removed from directing. Although Lexie is at the forefront of the coup, it is unclear if she herself would be able to take on the responsibilities of running the company.
In terms of theories on the big questions, there are plenty going on. In the show, we see a parallel universe theory, a duplicate city theory, or even a social experiment. Of course, some theories contradict some of the other stuff in the show. The solar eclipse being at the wrong time suggests that they may not even be on our Earth. The smell is never really explained either and remember that a coin can never land on your head. We suspect Cassandra lied about the last flip.
We also have the few end scenes where we see an even younger group of children and the adults still alive.
Hopefully character development continues and the relationships we see building or dividing throughout Season 1 continue.
Casting news for The Society season 2
The first big casting news came in April 2020 with the news that Olivia Nikkananen had moved on to a series regular.
Thanks to several IMDb updates, we can bring you a list of actors confirmed to be back, including:
Kathryn Newton Gideon Adlon Sean Berdy Natasha Liu Bordizzo Jacques Colimon Olivia DeJonge Alex Fitzalan Kristine Froseth José Julián Alex MacNicoll Toby Wallace Jack Mulhern Spencer House Emilio Garcia-Sanchez Grace Victoria Cox What to watch after finishing The Society season 1
There are many shows that belong to this type of genre. The biggest and most obvious show is actually another Netflix Original. We are referring to Between which unfortunately became MIA since its second season in 2016.
Many people have also compared the show to a number of The CW shows. These include Riverdale and The 100 which have similar themes or premises.
Netflix itself recommends The End of the F***ing World, Ameican Vandal, Stranger Things, and even the recent hit, Dead to Me, for those who enjoyed The Society.
