Since Monday, October 17, Ile-de-France residents can now validate most of their transport tickets directly from their smartphone! Except for iPhone owners, who will have to wait a little longer. But it is thus a significant part of the regulars of public transport in the Paris region who can now opt for the dematerialized ticket or Pass Navigo. How to set up this service on your Android smartphone?
All public transport users who have a Navigo Pass have already forgotten it at least once at home… Which can sometimes be a real ordeal to travel for a whole day in the Paris region. But the good news is that this should no longer be an issue, with the arrival of mobile tickets.
More ecological and more practical, the implementation of a system of purchase and validation of transport tickets directly from the smartphone symbolizes a small revolution in Île-de-France. A project that the region has been working on for a few years, to tell the truth, with a first test phase launched in 2019, as we are reminded Numerama. But access to this digital Navigo Pass was until now very limited, reserved in particular for holders of a Samsung model. Since Monday, October 17, this dematerialization is now generalized to all NFC-compatible Android smartphones (which is the case for most devices today), on the sole condition that they have at least of the Android 8 update – remember that it is an Android 13 version that is currently being deployed…
The Navigo Passes, but also the tickets are now available on Android smartphones
In 2019, the Île-de-France region told us that no less than 4.3 million Ile-de-France residents used a monthly Navigo Pass, to which were added some 440 million tickets sold each year. The deployment of this purchase and validation system on smartphones, which is based on HCE (Hosted Card Emulation) technology, therefore marks a real turning point for the daily life of public transport users, whether they are recurring or occasional for that matter. Because the monthly Navigo Pass is not the only transport ticket concerned by this dematerialization, as we learn from the Île-de-France Mobilités site.
Transport tickets available in dematerialized version on Android:
- t+ tickets and ticket booklets
- Orlybus and Roissybus tickets
- Navigo Day Pass (with choice of zones)
- Navigo Week Pass (zones 1 to 5)
- The Navigo Month Pass (zones 1 to 5)
- The Pass Navigo Jeunes Week-end (with choice of zones)
Note, however, that the annual Pass Navigo or imagine R cannot be validated on an Android smartphone. What about iPhone users? Well, the latter will have to arm themselves with a little more patience… But be aware that this service will also soon arrive on smartphones flanked by the bitten apple, via integration with the Apple Wallet. It is planned for sometime in 2023.
How to load tickets or a Navigo Pass on an Android smartphone?
As indicated on the Île-de-France Mobilités website, the procedure for buying a ticket or loading a Navigo Pass from your Android smartphone is very simple. First of all, you will need to download the latest version of the Île-de-France Mobilités mobile application from the Play Store. It is via this that you can buy the ticket or load the Navigo Pass of your choice, as illustrated in this video:
Then, to validate your ticket directly from your smartphone, two steps:
- Activate the NFC function of your phone beforehand (in “Settings”, follow the section “Wireless and networks” and select the NFC tab, then activate the NFC).
- Then at the public transport entrance, all you have to do is unlock the screen of your smartphone and pass it in front of the terminal. You won’t even need to be connected to the Internet to validate your title!
Note, however, to finish, that if you wish to obtain a dematerialized version of your Navigo pass on a smartphone, you will no longer be able to use your physical Pass. You will have to make a choice!
