The Society: the Netflix series finally canceled

While Netfix announced that it had renewed “The Society” for a second season, the streaming platform finally reversed its decision and canceled the series. The global pandemic prevented production of the show from continuing.

The History of The Society

Created by Christopher Keyser, The Society is a modern retelling of William Golding’s classic novel His Majesty of the Flies. The plot is centered on teenagers who are mysteriously transported to a replica of their wealthy Connecticut town without any adults. If their new life seems at first very fun without their parents, the teenagers will quickly realize that it is also dangerous. While trying to figure out what happened and how to get back home, they will then have to get along to survive and try to create a new society.

The Society is worn by Kathryn Newtonaka Abigail Carson in Big Little Lies, who here plays the character of Allie Pressman. The distribution of the series also includes Gideon Adlon, Sean Berdy, Jacques Colimon, Olivia DeJonge, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Alex Fitzalan or even Kristine Frøseth.

Netflix cancels The Society due to coronavirus

Last year, two months after the release of the first season, Netflix had announced that it had decided to renew The Society for a second chapter, convinced by the audience results at the start of the show. Christophe Keyser had also spoken about the rest of the series, revealing that unlike the first season, which was interested in the relationship between man and woman, the new chapter would study more the subjects of social classes and ethnicities. But we will ultimately not be able to find out what it would have given.

As we learn Deadline, the streaming platform finally decided to cancel The Society – as well as I Am Not Okay with Thisthe series with Sophia Lillis. Originally scheduled for release in late 2020, the second chapter of the series had to be postponed due to the global pandemic. Lately, according to the American media, the producers of the series hoped to be able to start filming for season 2 next month. But according to sources relayed by Deadline, the uncertainty around production dates and the management of a large cast, as well as the unexpected increase in budget because of the Covid got the better of the rest of the series. This, however, enjoyed strong support among the decision-makers of Netflix, and we therefore imagine that the decision must have been difficult for them to make.

Netflix reacts to the cancellation of The Society

The streaming service showed up disappointed to have to give up the second season of The Society in a statement still relayed by Deadline :

We have made the difficult decision not to move forward with the second season of The Society. We are disappointed to have to make a decision because of the circumstances created by COVID, and we are grateful to these creators, who include Chris Keyser, Marc Webb and Pavlina Hatoupis; and all of the writers, cast and production crew who have worked tirelessly to do for our subscribers around the world.

Unfortunately, the risk of seeing other series being canceled by Netflix or other streaming services or channels in the months to come cannot be ruled out. If the situation does not improve quickly, the pandemic will create a traffic jam as decision makers try to resume production of their shows. In addition to this, cost increases due to required security protocols and losses caused by the virus could overcome several series. Hopefully the makers will choose to shelve their shows as much as possible for a little while rather than cancel them altogether.
